How to FIND or put together a crew???

I have some Music Video projects coming up in 2004 and I would like to put together a small crew. What is the best way to go about this? At this point, it will have to be little or no pay for now but food would be provided and a copy of the final product as well. I am wearing to many hats on projects I do now and I need to concentrate more on the visuals and editing aspects of the shoot.

Any thoughts?

The videos will be shot on the DVX100. I am going to need a Location Scout, Make-up person, wardrobe person, lighting grips, etc.

I am not sure how to go about finding these people and then telling them that I am planning on paying them little or nothing for their help! I know that is wrong but I have seen film students put ads in the paper that said that. I guess you get your name in the credits!

Do you think finding some QUALIFIED college students that are studying TV and FILM to work on these projects would be a better idea?

Check out www.indieclub.com. About 15,000 members, so you can search their member list in your territory and find people who are interested in those specific crafts, and ask them if they'd be interested in participating. It's up to you to determine if they're qualified.

It is nearly impossible to get professional people to work for free, unless they know you well and you're in the habit of trading out favors with them. There's got to be something in it for them. College students may do it for the experience, sure, but are they qualified? Maybe. Pros don't need the experience, so they'll either do it for the cash, or for some future benefit to them in helping you out. Assuming you have skills that they could use, you could arrange to trade out volunteering, I do that with my crew here all the time.

If your situation is that you're going to benefit, and you're asking people to work for free to benefit you, well, you're not going to get too far with that. If it's all on spec, then with some proper networking you might get some pro's, but please be prepared to pay them back with equal labor.
