How to Film Spring Break...

First off I want to thank all the people who will read this and reply and also the whole dvxuser community, I have already learned a great amount.

My question is "how should I film this years Spring Break adventure?" I love to travel and I love to film/edit what I do and what other people are doing, whether it is an event, party, trip to somewhere... Last year I made a video that basically showed the gnarly scene at Lake Havasu, AZ. In short it a college get away with babes, booze, hot weather warm water and boats. Last years video can be found here NSFW

Back to my question... I am a new person when it comes to the reality of filming something legit. Everything from making a frame work of what you want to film, how to acquire media passes to B-Roll and everything in between. I'm starting to piece the puzzle together but I am a lost college kid in the woods.

Lastly I don't really know if I should give it a feel to appeal everyone as something you would see on the travel/Tru TV or possibly do a documentary of Spring Break @ Lake Havasu...

Thanks again!

Ps. I will either be renting a DVX100B or HPX170, because my DVX100a was stolen two months ago.

Dude, you gotta get rid of the guys, put hot chicks in the video, (that excludes skanks and fat chicks), get a bigger boat, bigger tits, and more booze! Then shoot it like TRU TV's Party Heat. Who wants to watch a bunch of guys play beer pong with no shirt's on?

This is some REALLY good advice. Please don't think I'm rude, not trying to be, I'm a former spring break pro (20 years and still counting).

hahah @ first i though your were just nocking but yeah I feel ya. Where you based out of or what spring break events do you cover?

I'd drop the 20th Century FOX wannabe logo. Looks cool but your video could get yanked for copyright infringement!

As I watch the video I'm going to type up notes...

There are audio issues. Nat sound should be on both speakers. Very irritating if wearing stereo headphones...

More music copyright infringement.

Effects remind me of an acid trip, not alcohol.

Shaky camera work making me dizzy.

Where are the closeups?

Yay, "action!" Still shaky though (boats...I know).

With the reversing the footage and constant color effects this is reminding me too much of an '80s video. In a not-good way.

The video reminds me of stuff I shoot when I'm not in "professional mode", which means I was there more for the event/to experience than I was to capture professional looking stuff. I would have done the same thing (screw the camerawork, I'm here to have fun!)

Just noticed the Vimeo descriptions says you shot this with a DVX100a. I would have guessed it was done with a camera phone or digital camera's video option.

Keep in the dudes. Unless your audience is male-only like a Girls Gone Wild video. If it's made to show your experience, then it's more of a true representation to show the goings-on with men too.

Your new/next video needs to be encoded at a higher data rate...especially if it's going to have erratic shakey cam motion. 512k bps ain't gonna cut it.

Conclusion: Decent YouTube video, poor Vimeo video.

A couple family members work at studios, about 12 years ago I made their studio logos on an old school version of 3D Studio Max, I had a dog pee on one. I put it on all my really crappy home videos, talk about some good laughs!

I'd drop the 20th Century FOX wannabe logo & Music because copyright
True

There are audio issues.
Rented the camera and one channel was broken lol (rented for supper cheap)

Effects remind me of an acid trip, not alcohol.
True, I need to stick to keeping colors more the same and work on that for sure
Shaky camera work making me dizzy.
Drinking/Boat Rocking explains a lot, but in the end way way to shakey like you said

video reminds me of stuff I shoot when I'm not in "professional mode",
First time every really trying to shoot and with the DVX. Total Noob 1yr ago.

I was there more for the event/to experience than I was to capture professional looking stuff.
Just like you thought, thats what happened.

encoded at a higher data rate
Thanks for the suggestion, 2-3mbps?

Conclusion: Decent YouTube video, poor Vimeo video.
True, I feel like I should delete it.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. Thats what I was looking for and appriciate you spending the time to do it. I'm just starting out with this hobby, kinda job at time so im learning one step at a time. I need to buy that DVXbook for starts I think... ps I'm not in film school so i just rent and try and learn, and read this forum and other online articles.
