how to fake a classic door eye?

hi.
I need to shoot through my door eye for a view of my staircase outside
The apartment.
my door eye is very dirty and old, almost unusable.
any other suggestions BESIDE using a fisheye lens?
I personally don't like the usual fisheye look they use in films..
I need more vintage organic feel..

Well, do you want it to look like you're looking through the hole or no? If so, you need a fisheye, there's no other way of getting that distortion.

Distort in post, and be sure to add crud and grunge to simulate dirt on the peep lenses. Some flare and desaturation might also help.

A buddy of mine did a shot exactly that way.

Buy a new "door-eye" and mount it in a part of something that represents the door. You can then point it anywhere you want.

Bonus is you can then replace your old one with the new one later.
