How to do this effect on United 93 trailer

Hi guys!

i'm trying to find a way to do the ripple-like effect in the United 93 trailer.
you'll see a bunch of them when the title cards appear. Ripple-like effects in and out of the screen, revealing title cards or covering them in their way.
what kind of effect is this?

I'm not sure what you mean by ripple effect. Could you list a specific time for an example?

Everything I saw in the trailer looked like dissolves and masking.
 
The effect is nothing more than a swipe or reveal, that overlays the sort of scan line look -- which is what I think you're referring to ripple effect. You make your own swipes in AE or you can go to a place like Digital Juice where there literally hundreds available. I wouldn't be surprised if there were something just like that available.
