How to do an "air blast"?

Hey All,

In Scott Pilgrim vs. the World during the fight sequences a lot of the "hits" have an air blast on the actor to highlight the impact.

This is better seen than described, in the "making of" you can see this twice is the first scene:

It looks like a barrel attached to a tube which I assume then goes to some sort of air compressor. Does anyone know what this set up is? Or even a way I can achieve a similar effect, that is create a high impact blast of air from off camera, maybe 6 foot away?

Any ideas welcome!

while those airzookas are cool, they don't have enough pressure to get the desired effect the op's lookin for.
look for plans for guacamole guns or air powered potato cannons that use a compressor and quick release valve, either electric, like a sprinkler valve or manual lever style.
you can also hook up a c02 canister like used in paintball to keep things simpler.

Thanks for the replies and pointers :o)

I'll give them all a go and see what it looks like, I'll report back here if anything works well for anyone else wanting a similar effect :o)

Yes, you need CO2, We use it a lot for explosions and sqiubs and stuff that needs to blow up. It's very safe (non flameable) no poisonous fumes. I can post a few different examples late tonight. One is a mortar round expplosion, another is a soldier is holding a canteen, he gets shot through the back, the bullet exits through his front, hits the canteen, blows out the canteen, then hits the soldier in fron of him. (50cal rd.) Any ways, with co2, and a large tank, you can create instant high pressure. Put it this way, it has the same concussion and sound as a grenade, without the shrap metal. it's awesome!
