Here's the formula.

Start with the video aspect ratio you have*. In this case, 16 x 9. Do the math. 16 / 9 = 1.777777. Divide that by the aspect ratio you want, in this case 2.39.

1.77777 / 2.39 = .7438. Multiple that by 100 and you get 74.38% of the image area is what you'll be using. Subtract that from 100 and you get 25.62% is what you need to crop. Divide that by 2 (top and bottom) and you get 12.81% crop factor to achieve the desired aspect ratio.

So you need to cut 12.81% (rounded to 13%) off the top and bottom of your footage to get the 2.39 aspect ratio. You can do this using the Crop effect and setting the crop factor to 13% for top and bottom. This applies to DVD or Blu-ray exports.

For web exports, you crop the footage upon export. 1080 pixels x 12.81% ends up being 138 pixels cut from top and bottom. The end result is 1920 x 804, which equals 2.39 aspect.

*It must be noted that here we are talking about the screen aspect ratio, NOT the pixel aspect ratio.

It's just doing simple math and creating the appropriate custom project in Premiere. The length of the video will always be constant so only the height will have to change. For example 2.35 aspect ratio for 1080p project means that the length is 2.35 times as long as the width, so dointhe math reveals that the image will have to be 1920 x 817. Create a project, then set up a sequence with this resolution size, drop the footage in, crop as needed and then export as a 1920 x 818 file (because Vimeo doesn't like odd number resolution and will glitch your video).

I'd recommend against creating a custom project. It's better to match the sequence settings to your footage, and do the cropping upon export.

No, it works for others too. I use F4V myself. It should work for any output that does not have to be DVD/Blu-ray compliant.

I agree, but export without the black bars will only be possible with wmvHD.

Then the export setting is wrong. As long as the final export resolution is set to exactly the 2.35 format with a square pixel aspect ratio, there will be no black bar.

Yes F4v works, but i cannot get it to work with H.264.
Edit: have to select QT.
