How to delete old attachments?

I'm trying to clean up some of the old pictures that I have attached to posts. In the manage attachments screen, the ones that I want to delete don't have the checkbox next to them. Is this because those threads are closed and marked as sold? I don't need to have those pictures around anymore so I just wanted to clean up and save space.
