How to connect a TV to a Computer?

For the longest time I have been using my DVX as a "go through" from my mac to my TV to use it as an external monitor. I just moved and now have a seperate room I use as an office, and the TV is in the living room.

I want to get a new monitor (TV) for my office, but I don't want to have to use the DVX as the "go through" anymore.

Is there a inexpensive "box" that can take a firewire and convert to... I don't know, RCA cables, or s-video, or something?

Seems like there should be, what are you guys using to connect an external monitor to your editing system?

Whatever device you get, make sure that it's a bi directional analog to digital converter. I believe Matrox makes some video cards that have a BNC out and allow you to view full screen previews in your NLE. I would say Canopus is probably going to be your best bet to find an inexpensive solution.

its easier to get a cheap Mini-DV cam, which you can then use as a deck/ feed your client monitor/ the trip to cancun that you dont want to take the dvx...

my gforce card has an s-video jack and i just plug in to that and then in the card properties i make it a dual monitor and extend the desktop to it.

Wow... what? Ok, what's a "gforce" card, and will it work with a mac, and how much is it, and are you just making all of this up and now I look like and idiot?:)

Hi Joe, Good to hear from you.

I use Macs, but my signal goes out via firewire to a Sony DSR-30 (DV/DVCam VTR). There are all kinds of outputs on the back of this VTR that I loop out of to a NTSC monitor... or, (in your case) a TV.

Lots of folks just buy a "cheap" DV palmcorder with firewire and A/V outs to do this with.

If you're on a Mac then you should already have a TV-out connection on your video card (unless it's a really old Mac). You can use that without buying a new vid card.

You just specifically asked for firewire conversion so I posted the canopus box. :)

You just blew my mind! What kind of connection is it? I have a dual 1.8 G5 I bought about a year ago. (I'm at work now, but I will check it out when I get home.)

The only reason I said "firewire" is because I didn't know there was a "video out" in the mac already. When I read that I had to take a minute to gather myself.

I AM an idiot.

Thanks.

And thank's Terry for the hello, I haven't come by here very often lately, so it's nice to be missed.

You're not an idiot. It's all good. :)

It will either be an S-Video connection or an RCA adapter. Check the back of the card. If that doesn't help check the manual that came with the G5. I think you'll be able to accomplish what you want without any extra hardware.

Ok, next question then, is there a cable that goes from the "pins" on the video card to a s-video or a rca cable, etc?

you should be able to get a card that has an S-video out on it, then you can take that right to your tv, or you can get an s-vid to rca inline adaptor, but they're about 20 bucks.
