How to, Compressing HD video to send through email, keeping decent quality?

I recently tried to send out a resume to a company that wanted to see a reel, but I couldn't seem to get the video file (short reel) small enough to go through email and keep the quality halfway decent. I've tried a bunch of free compression software but still looked crappy when opened up. Is this just the way it is, or am I not aware of a decent free software that can compress a file small enough to send through one of those monster.com application, which are a pain in the butt, and get it watchable.

Do they specify that you have to send them the file?

I've always just linked a vimeo or youtube reel

Recently I did a 3.5 minute short and selected 300x534 or so for reducing the resolution of my 1920x1080 original... selecting H.264 and even a 1.5-3 Mbs bit rate, one pass compression, it was still a 24 MB file. I may have tried reducing the 'quality' factor, but at that point it was small enough for what I needed to have.

I was using the Adobe Media Encoder, as opposed to 'free' software.

I would recommend the 'dropbox' or upload to Vimeo and send a URL pointer, password protected if there is a privacy issue.
