I am new to editing and filmmaking in general and have a bunch of tapes with footage but no timecode. I am unsure if this will be a problem. I recently got FCP and plan to begin capturing this week.

Any suggestions? I'm very new to this and I worry that this will cause some problems

Thanks in a dvance

"Capture Now" would be your best solution for logging each individual takes, althoiugh you can't rely on the offline edit as havily though, so make sure you back up that footage once you capture it.

weird.

i think going to capture settings and picking non controllable device would fix you not being able to capture

Yup that is what I was gonna say. You have to select Non Controllable Device then you should be ok. I have to select that when I bring in footage from my external DVD player.

What kinds of tapes? DV tapes always have timecode.

SUPPOSED to, but not always. This EXACT same problem happened to me this past Tuesday, I received 2 DV tapes that had been printed to tape from FCP 6.0 into an HVX200, the image was fine but for some strange reason there was no timecode on the tape.

"CApture now" didn't work, as FCP kept waitiing for timecode, so I just slapped the tape into a PD170 I had sitting there, and captured it over RCA cables into my DVX100B. I then imported it into FCP. I probably lost a little resolution that way, but the footage was shot on an HVX200 in HD(it was some greenscreen work) and going to be intercut with my SD DVX for an SD final output so it didn't really hurt and wasn't noticeable.

The "non-controllable devices" trick might work but I've never tried it. I might try it to just to see when I get back into the office.

ETA: We do need to clarify what kind of tapes he's talking about.
