How to attach a light to my stand... HELP!

Hi Everyone,

I am shooting my first feature film starting this Saturday. I have some light stands that I used in the past that are:

I just recently purchased American DJ Complete par can kit 64 lights (2 of them) for use in the movie. I was planning on using them with the stands that I already have. But unfortunately The hole that is on the light will not fit onto my current stand.

Here are some pics:

Can anyone think of a way that I can get this to work? Any/All help is appreciated :)

Those models are mostly made to be put on a grid which would mean you would attach a clamp there. What you normally need to put something like this on a baby (5/8") stand is a "baby stand to yoke adapter" also known as a TVMP adapter. Matthews and Avenger make one, Cool Lights has one, many companies do. There's generally two kinds: one where you insert a bolt through the yoke and screw into the adapter, and another type (like mne) which has a long bolt as part of the adapter and you insert it through the yoke and attach a locking nut and wing nut to secure it. Both types have a 5/8" hole (16mm) in the other side of the adapter and a thumbscrew to secure it to the stand. Looks something like this:

Hope this helps.

I ran across this on a shoot a while back. If you need a quick fix there is something you can do... All it takes is a quick run to a hardware store.

Just use a wingnut. Screw it on tightly and it should lock the light down to the stand. You should get the proper yoke adapter anyway though.

I keep a few of them around in my kit anyway. They come in handy from time to time.

Is that the exact one that I would need? I have no idea the size of the thread on top of the light stand. I see you work or own cool lights. How fast could you get 2 of these to Florida?

I would use something like that, but... If you look at the pictures the thread barely breaks the surface of the hole. It would never work :( I need to find some sort of fix by Friday evening. If I can not get those other adapters by than I am not sure what I am going to do.

I could Post mail express it overnight to you if we get it out tomorrow, you should get it and that's cheaper then fedex overnight. Should cost about $29 I think. The adapters are $11.99. The bolt is roughly 3/8" thick so as long as your hole is larger than 3/8" you'll be okay. Contact me at richard@coollights.biz if you want us to help. Thanks.

So it will sit on top of the post?

I will talk to the director tonight (my brother) and show him the part. I am just the Production Assistant and doing all of the leg work on stuff like this lol.

Thanks in advance.

Bogen 014-38.

Previously called (and some stock will still say) 3102.

$9.95-10.95 from most retailers. May be up to $12.95 at a few.

Use a washer (best is fender washer... any hardware store, ten cents each) under the included nut you see on the post. The post is 3/8" so it's very sturdy and you can tighten this stand adapter onto the light and forget about it... consider it part of the light if you like.

Otherwise look up Camera Rental... or GRIP. This is a common item... that most people will call a stand adapter. This is far more secure then using a wing nut on your stand... the stand adapter is captive... so you're tightening the light to the side of the top post, which transfers the weight load into the post itself and allows the stand to support the weight as it was designed. Much better. Much safer.

A stand to yoke adapter like ours would bolt to the yoke on one side and go onto the baby adapter securely on the other side and you'd tighten it on there with a thumbscrew on the side.

Try it. It will work, I used the same technique on the exact same light.

Your right it barely breaks the surface, but the shape of the wingnut allows it to reach lower.

Just make sure the wingnut you buy is the same shape as the picture... Which is pretty much standard.
