Hey there,

been thinking bout "trying to get into" a film school.

ATTANTION: What follows is a humble optinion by a "newcomer" (not to this forum but to the field of filmmaking in general), so PLZ feel free to correct me! I'm writing the following "Intro" so ya know "something" bout me. (most of the time when someone writes something like what I am about to write, I ask my self "damn, how am I gonna help him out if I dont know what he already knows? What if he knows ZERO bout basics like "apperature" or "shutterspeed" or maybe "lightning" etc? So hope this gives ya a certain idea :)

I think that if you are close to a "filmmaking capital", you probably dont "need" to get into film school to make "propper" movies. (ya know, like hollywood, NY, london, berlin+munich etc) btw I am from germany :) but far from a "capital" :( Cuz ya might find it easier to get into lower jobs or find "cheap actors who work for food but are actually talented" and "nice ppl with gear who would ask for thousands of dollars to help ya out" etc. [not sayin its EASY, but rather "very" possible]

Where as living somewhere "outside" will make it SUPER hard to get ppl who are actually doing movies and could help ya out with their talent, cuz they long moved to theses "capitals". . .

Everyone whos been doin it (filming of course! :P) for a longer period of time knows that no matter how good you are, doing it ALL on your own wont get you too far.

Could be a genius storywriter who comes up with a story thats SUPER low on "actors" and "locations" and doesnt
need much of "this and that" (like crazy lightning or special effects or whatever) you still need a few people around
to take care of things like "sound", which you cant "do on camera" if you are looking for quality, or camera, if you are
working with unprofessional actors (dude. . . a director is actually DOING a job on set even if many say "best thing a
director could do on set is do nothin" [is what a famous director ones said, dunno who] this does NOT mean "let them
do their thing and dont force your optinion" (should never force it, but you are more or less the guy/gal who gets everyone
to "go into a certain direction". . . hence the name :P . So I would rather have my eye on actors peformance than making sure
"framing, fluid movement, focus etc" is right. . .

Yes. . . you could make a compromise like write yourself and direct and do the camera, but sound as well? Acting? There are only so many solutions till you hit a wall and find yourself in a situation where you are making TOO many compromises and your film is suffering greatly. . . for something "propper", you need "people" with ya. . . (please do be like "do animation" . . . if I knew how or had the motivation to learn all thats needed to do it, I would have done it. . . ;) )

damn. . . hate when this happens ^^ I actually wanted to ask something along this:

SO, I figured, going to filmschool will give me then chance to be around lots of ppl who. . . well, who are into doing movies ^^ and collaborate with them will be easy. Also this'll give ya the chance to seriously do some "improving your connections" and lots more :)

Did anyone SUCCESFULLY apply to one of the bigger filmschools and knows what one needs to be accepted? PLZ dont gimme "well tis might help and that might help" if ya only guessing ^^ these are the ones that are, i think quiet obvious: (btw we talking "directing")

have one or two good shorts that show your talent
have been working in the field (even SUPER low jobs)
have one or two "polished" scripts

What I am looking for is:

"Do NOT apply unless you have: a,b,c and maybe some of "d" cuz this is what actually got ppl inside these schools."

And I'm asking for those bigger school cuz there are MANY who offer media courses and other stuff thats highly helpful but this thread aint about this :)

Specifically UK's NFTS, anyone who got into that one or knows someone whos been attending a course and could get us insider info?

I searched and searched (cuz I suck at asking . . . tend to go off topic like crazy -.-, and tend to visit forums to "read" rather than write :/ (hence the low count) ) and all i found was bout ppl taking "philosophically" bout filmschool. . . and how they faild at getting in there but never mention why only that they tried somethin else etc. . .

Yep, have a hard time writing "short and to the point" :/

Thanks alot, any help SUPER appriciated!
