How to achieve this split screen effect?

I caught this series recently, and their intro is pretty impressive. I am working with Premiere CS5 and After Effects and interested in how something like this could be achieved. I tried just free forming some of my clips around, but its like in this intro the clips are laid out and a camera created within the editor is moving around along with the lines. Any one have any ideas?

It looks to me like they're just animating masks and using solids to create the thicker lines and animating them on the same paths as the masks.
