How to achieve the low contrast look?

I don't think the look here is "low contrast" per say. It's more of a desaturated color grade, which you should be able to achieve in post.

You should be able to achieve that look with a GH3 or Canon DSLR. Most of that look would be done in your post grade. If you expose properly (Watch so that you do not overexpose or underexpose the footage) in post you can bring up the black levels and bring down the highlights and play with your mid tones to get what you like. All of those videos do look de-saturated so you would want to play with that. I would also try flatting out the gamma curve a bit. I am just now really learning color grading using Apple Color, but I have done a look close to those videos using FCP 7. I add the 3 way color corrector, brightness and contrast controls and a gamma curve filter. Then play with it. What you are doing with a look like that is really crushing the whole luminance range of the image and moving it towards the middle (On a waveform monitor, available in most NLEs). I kind of have a love hate relationship with that look and am kind of moving away from it for a more "Crisp", less "Milky" look with more saturation. ... But to each there own on that.

I find shooting with vintage lenses add to the washed out 'milky' low contrast look. Especially if your shooting to look like the period go with lenses from that time period.

Take a solid frame of a color somewhere between pink and purple and overlay it on your footage. Play around with different blending modes and transparency settings. For a start.

1- Adjust the gamma of your video so there is no longer any true black or white

2- Then desaturate the color

3- Finally grade to which ever color mix you want

guess I should read what camera he's using.

having said that, I've had some luck shooting with regular lighting and doing what others suggested by taking a solid color in premiere or after effects and playing around with the opacity combined with the screen transfer modes. i.e.. multiply, overlay, screen, etc..
