how this effect is done using fcp/after effects

about at 1:22 they have a bunch of the same kiteboarder replicated. this is repeated a bunch throughout this video and i was wondering if anyone knew how this was done. i have after effects and fcp as well
 
I've seen this done before and I've wondered if I would be able to do it myself. Check out the snowboard video in this thread, it has a similar effect. I came up with a method of motion tracking and masking in After Effects which is a little bit complicated to understand. Essentially, my method involved motion tracking the shot on to one big composition so that the shot moved across the comp in a way which looks as though the frame is a window into a static view of the scene. After this, the shot is duplicated and offset in time so that copies are produced. Masking is then used so that the different copies coexist. This entire comp would then be dropped on to another with the tracking data pasted into the anchor point and the comp aligned so that the motion of the frame was reversed.

Does any of that that make sense?
