Hi guys just need some help with setup, after doing much research viewing best field monitors in my budget for when I edit short films I decided on getting the KRK Rokit RP8 speakers and also planing on getting a 40 inch plasma tv so can view finished video or part video on a normal tv just to see what it looks like before compressing files into certain formats if that makes sense.

I just seem a little stuck at the mo, have given a dedicated room in my house to act as my editing suite and hope to do similar like this guy has done:

Filming is a hobby for me so you can imagine Im more dazzled with the setup and function... joke lol

Question is how do I hook up the active speakers to my g5, is it a cable that goes in the back or do I need a certain mixer that connects the speakers to the back.

Sorry am not too clued up as you can tell. Also I have a duel screen already connected to my single graphic card, if I want the tv attached do I need to get another graphic card and how do I have that set up so just the final movie is shown on it?

Sorry for dumb questions

Well, the speakers are almost always hooked up to a mixer which is hooked up to your IO card, weather that be a Matrox MXO2, Aja Kona, or whatever.

damn so i need more than just wires, okay mixer and io card, i figured it was a case of finding the right cables to lug in back of mac. what price am i looking for mixer and i/o card?

Depending on what you are looking for in an I/O card you are looking a few hundred to a few thousand. For the mixer, the price range is under $100 to a few thousand.

A Matrox MXO is a very cost-effective way to add a broadcast monitor to HDTV solution (via component video), and it will also work with your second LCD (via DVI). It outputs stereo audio via RCA jacks, but to use powered monitors like the KRKs you'd need a mixer or other line level device that has a control room volume knob on it.

A multichannel audio I/O box like a Digidesign MBox2 might be a great solution as it also has mic inputs and a monitor volume knob, and it includes industry-standard Pro Tools software. Various versions are available from about %300-700. The lower priced ones run on USB and the higher on Firewire 400. BTW I've found that a firewire audio interface (I have a MOTU 828MkII) doesn't necessarily break the bank where disk throughput is concerned, especially if the drives are connected to FW800. If more bandwidth is needed, a cheap firewire PCI card can be added.
