how should i calculate sound investment in a single narrative project?

another mic worth considering, though its phantom power only, is the at4073a - a good step up from the ntg2, slightly brighter, hotter than the ntg3. If you're doing much filming inside though you'd ideally want a hyper cardioid too

Yeah my previous answer was rather flip, but it is NOT incorrect, there just other correct answers as well.
Most condenser mics that require phantom tend to want 18 to 48v depending on the model and manufacturer, with 48v being their ideal voltage for operation of its internal circuitry with 12v to 18v being their minimal allowable voltage, and YES they usually do have different performance characteristics based on the voltage.
a battery optional condenser tends to have that voltage at its lower end of specified performance not its optimal range, there fore phantom powered mics do perform better than when battery powered.
that is the physics of electronics.

and I apologize ahead of time if i seem condescending, I do not mean to.

ok, phantom it is..
how does the dr-100 divides it's battery consumption ? first it finishes the chargeable original and arterward move on to the AA's?

so- i got a good deal in Israel buying the basic Rode stuff:

ntg-3.
micro boom.
shock mount.
cat thingy.
cable.

i was considering getting a Blimp instead some of the accessories,
but most chances i won't be at extreme open space windy conditions at all.

i might have to get a mixer at some point, but i'll start with this.

BTW- there IS a shortage of serious apiring sound 'students'. and i could forget about finding one with any decent equipment.
so... i can only count on myself for now.

The only thing I'd change in your setup there is the boom. I really think you should try for around 10' / 3m for a starter boom.

If you're doing indoor work, you'll need a second mic - a hypercardioid.

You can configure it for either way. When I was using it without external power, I would configure it to use the AAs first, then auto switch to the internal. rechargeable. As soon as I would see the display change to the rechargable, at first opportunity I would swap out the AAs, power it back up, and it would be back on the AAs having used only a little of the rechargeable. I could go most of the day like this, but I was changing out AAs every hour or so.

this is quite smart :)
thanks.

ok, bought all the stuff.
tested the DR100 with the NTG-3 :)
this is quite exiting.

one question: what's the dr100 (or any other recorder i guess) optimal db recording level ?
right now (low talk quite home test) the input is set to high, the knob is around 5-6

thanks!

Not so much unique to the DR-100 but I tend to record my dialog at around -20 to around -15with peaks hitting -12 to -6
