How reliable is fcp edit list?

I've heard rumors that the edit list that fcp puts out sometimes isn't so reliable, or at least not 100%. Also I've been told to back up my final cut pro books folder onto a cd. Should I also do that with the clapboard icon with the title of my project?

Thanks

I've never onlined before so I'm trying to cover as many bases as possible.

Of course I'll have to put any stills that are in the project onto a cd also.

When I export to omf I gather the actual recordings (not the links to my desktop) of the snd effects and music etc...are carried forward to the online editor that way.

while I generally don't recommend upgrading in the middle of a project, a lot of onlining issues have purportedly been addressed in 5.1.2. Not saying all, just saying purportedly better.

FCP has definitely had its issues in the past, esp. if you time remapped or time reversed a shot.

So if I speeded a shot up it may have problems with that. I have fcp 5.0 how would I upgrade to 5.1.2.
