How quiet does it need to be?

Hi all,

Just a question for my fellow designers and builders. I make a tabletop dolly system and I have been working on incorporating a drive system so that the operator is not manually pushing the dolly but running it via remote. My question is how quiet do you all think it needs to be? Speed, smooth movement and control are not an issue. Anyone with thoughts please chime in. I don't have any demo video of the unit with the motorized movement but here is a video doing it manually.

Yeah, my remote head is quite noisy and it can be a problem... I had actualy considered doing exactly this with my tabletop dolly.

Im not sure how you planned to do it but I designed my drive system to be quiet so maybe it will help you...

There is a post at either end of the track and a cable is strung between them (thin 1mm brass photo hanging cable) At one end is a spring to keep it tigt. On the carrage there is a motor with a 25mm diameter pulley on it. This pulley faces down, level with the cable and paralell with the cable. The cable is then looped around the pulley so that when the motor turns, it winds itself along the cable.

This will help reduce gear grinding noise but the key here is to choose a decent quality motor. You could also try using a plastic coated or synthetic cable which will keep it a bit quieter.

I found that synchronous motors were quietest.

Something like this

you would need to find a 12v version somewhere idealy....

Everything I have tried so far is audible over the boom. I was hoping someone might have a DB level that the unit needs to be under for most applications so I could source based on that information. The really quite motors that are applicable can be pretty expensive.
