This would be pretty incredible if it didn't have such a tragic ending. I came home from a shoot last night and started capturing the tapes. Took a break and I noticed that there were some new menus that had appeared (as in they were never there before). These were things like "SDI Out", "Genlock", TC IN/OUT and something called "Fast Instant Focus". Looking on my computer, I noticed that my NLE is recognizing the camera not as an XH-A1 but an XH-G1!
Well I got pretty excited since it's basically an upgrade that fell from the heaven, until I noticed 2 problems:
1)I couldn't control aperture. The f-stop is locked at f1.0 and the iris ring no longer functions.
2)I couldn't control shutter speed. Shutter speed is locked at a bizarre 1/30'' (sic) and couldn't be adjusted.
After trying out every possible settings with no success, I decided to reset the camera, and all the English menus are replaced with Japanese! The iris and shutterspeed still doesn't work (although everything else does).
My guess is that the firmware for the G1 is embedded within the A1 to simplify manufacturing, and the normally dormant features are somehow activated, although I have no idea how. I'm probably gonna have to send this in and pay God knows how much to have this fix as Canon does not have user updatable firmware. This sucks.
