How much would you pay for a good boom pole that you would expect to use - for the next 5 years?

Running a small production company i have learned that buying cheap gear costs more in the end then buying the right gear and bearing the price. The right gear will last, is reliable, well designed and will fill most applications - and in the end you get your money out of it.

So apply that knollege to boompoles? How much shoudl I pay?
I'm thinking about $200.

i have internal wired carbon fiber k-tek. cost roughly 500. you can get decent aluminums in the 200 range. I dont know how decent they are, but i think gitzo makes cheaper poles

gitzo just came out with a new carbon fiber 12' pole for under $300 at NAB. I havew the previous gen gitzo and I love it... get the new one!

Fishquail,

There are way too many variables to be able to say whether a $200 boom is the "best" one for you. Honestly, I have two right now, and will probably add a third to my kit. I use the shortest, lightest one when possible, go longer when needed, and with the third, will be able to go even longer.

It really depends on the types of projects you're working on.

Is the new Gitzo out yet? I was about to get the Gitzo 7680c, but it got discontinued. What's the new model?

there are old stile ambient boom poles - less then 500 will live more then any other boom poles

There were a few people who PM'ed me when Gitzo discontinued the 7680c... they were upset about missing out on a great value for a starter pole.

Uh... to those people... I told you so!

Hahahahah. I know I know. Don't rub it in. Lol.

After researching i decided on the K-tek "KE110CCR" - Aluminum Boompole with Coiled Cable and Side Exit - 2.5 - 9 feet. for $239.95
I also got the Audio-technica AT8415 shock mount. for $50.

I think 9 feet should serve most purposes.
Im guessing Having an internal cable should save maybe a minute of set up time during shoots with not having to wrap the cable around the pole. -and also speed up break down time.

are either of these booms internal wired?

only down side with internal cabling is when that cable eventually gives trouble you'd rather shoot your granny than go back to cabled. i should know... happened to me last week. I'll miss my granny. :)

I just picked up the Ktek and also a little holder to mount it ounto a c-stand

And you can extrend to get 12' buy just mounting the holder onto the arm of the c-stand. My Avenger C-stands hold the boom mounted at the end of the arm and with the entire 9' extended on the ktek and with a shotgun attached.
