How much would you charge?

I have NO idea how to bill for something like this as I've never done something like this before.

Long story short:

My cousin's good friend is a plastic surgeon who wants to put together a DVD show casing one of their procedures.
They will loop the DVD in his offices, I think 3 of them.
The filming will be broken down into four 1 1/2 hr sessions as this specific operation is structured in four visits.

How much should I charge them for shooting and editing this?

Jay

$1,000 a minute of edited completed footage??

so 4 1 1/2 hours of footage
=
$360,000

long story short thats crazy

i must be missing something

For each minute of final product he means. So if the final DVD is 5 minutes long. then thats 5,000 dollars.

10 minutes, 10,000.

So its not charging by your hourly wage , just a flat fee of how long the final tape is.

Hourly Rate. So if they want changes to the edit, they know what they are getting into. 100/hr? 50? that's up to yOU!

Ok, I like some of these figures. They give me an idea.

So would you guys present a contract? If so, would you be willing to email or PM me a copy of what you use so that I could modify it a bit to suit this?

rcbrown23?
Cynic821?

Sure... PM me with your email, and I'll send an outline of a contract. Give me till tonight to send it, as I'm not at home right now.

And YES, Cynic821 was correct. From what I understood, this is a "promo" video that this guy wants to loop in his office wating room. Promo vids usually last between 3 to no more than 12 minutes or so. So... final product = 7 minutes. 7K in your pocket.

That's the "simple" version. You could also break it down to hourly rates. Someone mentioned $50-$100 an hour, but that's WAY too low. I'd say more like $300-$500 an hour. You don't want to walk away from this without at LEAST 5 grand. That's the bare minimum, and this is a DOCTOR we're talking about, so they have the money to pay.

It also depends on what exactly he wants done. How much gear? lighting? a PA on hand? Audio? You'll need more specifics to make an accurate proposal.

Pick him apart to find out EXACTLY what he wants, and tell him you'll get back to him within 48 hours with a proposal.

I'm going to talk more in detail with him tonight but the kicker is they called me this afternoon and need me to come in today @ 5pm to pick up the first series of shots. I'll find out more of what they are looking for before anything gets filmed and then lay down my quote. If they're game then it's all good but if not then what should I do? I could use the $$ so I don't want to play hard ball about it.

well the surgery they want you to document cant be delayed , so be careful since they either may say the hell with it or go with someone else. They want to document a real surgery and they will not put a customer on hold to wait for you, they are gonna make a killing on the surgery most likely. so try and get some good cash out of it, whatever you think is fair, though ive never made over a few grand off one job itself i can easily see upwards of 7,000 to 10,000 being fair. especially if it turns out being longer than 15 minutes.

what i picture in my head is it being basically a single half hour episode , kind of like a low budget extreme makeover episode. all the same without the personal stuff about the person and what not. that might be what they have in mind. with some interviews and things like that, theres gunna be alot of different types of shoots i can imagine.
