How much would you charge?

Hello,

I was wondering, how much would you charge to film a road rally event (if you were interested)?

I'm hosting a puzzle hunt road rally later this year and while I'll be filming, I can't be at all of the checkpoints so I'm considering hiring another camera person or two but I have no idea what someone would charge for something like that.

Thanks,
T

Why not just get some quotes? Then you'll know what others are charging. For myself it depends on what the client wants. If they want cinema quality then its going to cost them more than if they just want SD.

Quotes on here or is there another site I should be looking at? It's not as hmmmm ... "serious", I should say as needing any kind of cinema quality. We are playing a game and I'd like to have something watchable to give to the teams to remember the game and to show our friends. I just can't be everywhere at once. :)

Since you're hosting the event you should ask if some of the participants if they would be willing to bring along their cameras. This would include volunteers working checkpoints as well. At the end of the day collect the DV tapes and you have a bunch of source footage for your edit. Of course the cameras don't match and the camera work isn't professional, but that doesn't matter if it's a project that's just for fun. I've done this on a few corporate gigs. We handed out a dozen cheap DV cams to small teams for a day and edited the content together the next day. Yeah, some of the material was rather random, but when they viewed the finished product they enjoyed it quite a lot. I think this was because they were part of the process. When they see it on the big screen they say, "Hey look I shot that!".

Just a little food for thought. It'll keep your costs down and your shooting ratio up.

Thanks for the info milksac. I'd thought about this and this is still an option if it works out. Part of the problem is there are only three of us on Game Control and one of us can not drive at all so she has to ride with me the whole time. And we are unsure if we will be able to get volunteers for our checkpoints. Because this is typically a high tech game not having someone at all the checkpoints won't be that big of an issue (all teams are tracked real time via our GPS tracking system so we know what routes they take and when they reach each checkpoint and how long they stay at each checkpoint ect.)

I'm very much into hiring some extra camera person OR like you said trying to see if it's possible for teams to bring their own cameras if they have them. But it is surprising how many people don't even have digital cameras (this is required to play), let alone video cameras. I do have an extra small video camera and I can check to see about getting some more.

Maybe I'll check e-bay and see if someone is selling some of the older digital video cameras in a lot for cheap. I can make stable car mounts for all of them.

Mixing footage will be fine for this even like you said. But also hiring more cameras may not be out of the question either. Since this is a road rally (no really typical of how this game is played), our checkpoint times are precise so all the teams would need to arrive there at that exact time. So a camera person would just have to be there for no more than 30 minutes.
