A guy who I sort of know wants me to teach him vegas. I consider myself an expert at vegas. He has a family and makes ok money. How would you charge him? By hour? By the job, how much would you charge him too?
I would charge what my time is worth such as what I get for editing time. I would not know how to charge something like this by the job- for example, when is the job done? You need to know what he wants to learn in order to come up with an offer. You could give a good faith estimate of how long it would take you to show certain specified methods or techniques, or what he should know how to do at the end of that time. There is a wide range from basic skills to being able to handle multiple layers, effects, audio sweetening, etc.
If that is too much for him he could buy some of the DVD tutorials available.
This would be my approach. I'm sure there will be other ideas.
I don't know many software trainers who make editor's rates while training. Typical is a day rate for training - based on 8 hour day with a couple breaks a lunch. There are other variables as to location and what additional gear you may need to bring.
I've done quite a bit of this - happy to throw some figures at you offline - pm me.
