How much RAM are you using with AE?

Just curious, but I recently bought a new cpu with 8GB.

Before I installed the additional memory I had purchased, I rendered out a previous project in AE that took 13 mins. After installing 32GB of RAM, I rendered out the same project and it only saved me a whopping 3 minutes in difference.

I have a 3.5 GHz intel Core i7 processor along with a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4GB graphics card.

What would I need to see a major difference? Like half the time?

Rendering is a mix of a lot of things but since its the cpu that does the calculations that would be the main part to look at. At some point the disk speed also comes into play in regards to how fast you can write the data.
I think a start would be the number of cores. Also remember that each core has a max of ram it can use productively. I think its 6gbpr core or something like that.

Legrev has it right, start with number of cores. To use the multiprocessing engine, I think AE needs 1.5GB -2GB per core minimum. So if you leave some memory for the rest of the computer, ideally you should install at least 16GB. 24GB or 32GB would be best.

AE leans on the graphics card quite a bit too for a lot of things. Ray traced 3D being the most noticeable one with render times of minutes vs hours with the right card.
