how much money did you spend?

Right now I own nothing, but once I start my feature.... I'll have... about 6.5 million in equipment. Insurance is going to be a nightmare, lol.

More than I care to count. It's a matter of dedication and desire. How badly do you wish to make it? I got a degree in Computer Science then moved back in with my parents and kept driving the same car I had owned for years...just so I could buy gear. I lived with them for years then finally got married and moved into a cheap apartment. When my last vehicle died I bought another cheap one. I have a ton of gear, but I've bled for it. Why? Because I have to make it.

It's a matter of dedication.

I made about $25k off of a $800 digital 8 camera and a $70 pyro DV firewire card and the free Ulead Mediastudio Pro 6 software that came with it in 3.5 years. Then I upgraded equipment.

Master what you've got, make it a goal to get the best ROI, upgrade gear when needed.

Skill > Equipment

I know a guy who did months of research poring over gear before finally purchasing about 40,000 dollars worth of video equipment, presumably to start a wedding video studio. He could afford it, but he had never shot a single wedding before and still hasn't. The equipment sits around unused.

I think there are plenty of people here like that as well...they like the IDEA of making movies, and the IDEA of owning what they think is the necessary package to be able to do so....but they never get around to actually making anything.

You don't need the whole set up....you can make great movies without a mattebox, or a follow focus or a 35mm adapter. Unless you've been creating, creating, creating, and constantly running up against the limitations of the gear you already have, additional bits and pieces aren't going to change anything. Except the numbers on your bank statement.

i only own post gear... two final cut bays... and we're talking about $50,000 for both (about $25,000 each) of those. that includes everything, the raid, the HD client monitors, good speakers, the desk...

That's amazing. Can you give a rough breakdown?
