How Much HD Space for HD Post

I'm considering moving up from the 100a to the HVX200 and am looking at all costs involved in doing so. One biggie that seems to stand out is the needed hard drive space for data-intensive HD.
I currently am running:
- Raptor 74gb for the system
- 2- 250gb SATA for storage
- 1- Maxtor Atlas V SCSI 147gb for scratch
- 1- Maxtor Atlas V SCSI 147gb for export

I know this isn't enough space for HD. What would you HD shooters recommend.

BTW- I'm running twin Opterons 2.8ghz, Tyan Thunder mobo, QuadroFX 1400 graphics.

Thanks,
Joe

How is 800gb not enough for HD? What type of work do you plan on doing?

HD takes up about 60 gb per hour at maximum, or about 24gb per hour if shooting 720/24pN. With 800gb you'd potentially have 13 hours of 1080 footage online at once, or about 30 hours of 720/24p footage online.

Sounds like I might be ok then. Although, most of my work is documentary style and can include a lot of footage. But, it sounds like I won't need as much storage as I initially thought.

Would you recommend RAID 0 (using the two SCSI drives) when working with HD? Is the additional bandwidth needed?

Thanks,
Joe

I ran two streams of HD including transitions, in real time, off the internal hard disk of a G5. I don't think you'll need to RAID 0 them, but using SATA or whatever you should be fine. I'd defer to someone like Shane Ross though, who's been editing massive HVX200 projects and probably has some excellent recommendations for us...

I would recommend RAID 2 or some other redundant setup. RAID 0 is fastest, but you also run the risk of losing your footage.

DVCPRO-HD runs great on SATA and PATA...so you really don't need to worry about speed with redundant raids.

Thats my 2 cents.
