How many people here do offline edits?

I have a powerbook and find editing and rendering much slower when using full rez SD. So i usually do offline edits with lower rez footage.

I was just wondering who else does this? And if they find it usefull...

It is the only way unless you have lots of drive space andgreat patience. I offline everyting and uprez when done. It can be a bit painful sometimes but Ken Stone's website has a good amount of info for onlining.

best of luck,

Done both.

Full res for SD is the only way.

Looks like I'll step back for HDV and my wimpy system.

I always online. Storage is cheap....time isnt.

My feelings exactly.

Even onlining with HD isn't bad. Now 4K from RED, that might be an offline. :)

I do an offline to online work flow. It is the only way to get the most potential out of your footage.

Could please elaborate on the potential part? I've always onlined my footage because speed and storage space has never been an issue. I would love to hear some of the benefits of offlining.

I run FCP and RT

Well when you online you edit in an uncompressed codec instead of a compressed codec. You have to remeber that everything you do is subject to the compression of the codec. So if you bring in graphics, do effects, color correct ect.. it all is compressed by the codec you are woking in. If you have noticed if you bring in a graphic from photoshop into a DV squence it tends to look a little different, not as sharp as the original. That is beacuse it has a 5:1 compression put on it. So working uncompressed dose not subject any of your media to any aditional compression

Oh, so you capture the online from say, a DVX, in an uncompressed codec? Makes sense.

My usual workflow is to capture in Apples Quicktime codec for DV, then if I export anything for graphics/effects work it's all as image seq or uncompressed. What about CC? Do you online that or do that in the offline as well?

anyone have a link to someplace that would explain the the hell everyone's talking about? I'm lost and am questioning everything I've learned about DV and editing. :(

Glad I'm not the only one who is confused.

Offline Editing - Working with footage that is not the original aquisition. Example shoot film, have that downconverted to DV and editing the DV footage. That DV footage is now an offline resolution. Then once you're finished with your edit you replace the DV footage with the original film. This then becomes your online edit.

You can also acquire 1080 footage, but for ease, edit it at DV resolution. Again, offline, online. Or shoot DV and offline as FCP's photo jpeg resolutions. Offline edit the low res stuff, then when you're finished recapture at DV res for your online.

That help? :)

Edit: Beaten by 1 minute. :(
