How many Andromeda DVX's?

Justin_Kirch

Runner Up.
How many people on this site have Andromedized DVX's. I'd like to find out just to get a clear number of how many good or bad experiences there have been over all.

Personally I think it's the best thing you could do to the DVX. I'm excited to save up for mine!

Matthew Bennet is the guy that advocates Andromeda the most, I think. He's been using it for a few months.

I too am saving up for it.

However the lack of news and testimonials from people having done it is a bit disconcerting.

I remember reading in another thread that someone tried to contact them regarding an Andromedization and never received a reply.

I wonder if that was ever straightened out.

Can I ask you guys a question? Not trying to sway you or anything, but I want to know if there's something I haven't thought about yet.

What's the benefit of purchasing the DVX100 Andromeda upgrade at this stage? Even if you already own a camera, wouldn't you still shell out 3000+ for the actual upgrade and acquisition system? At this point in time, there're cameras available that are on that same level, and ones that are being released in the very near future.

I have a DVX100a. As a person that's awaiting the Canon XH-A1, what would you say is a benefit to purchasing Andromeda over the A1?

This is not a debate!!! I repeat, NOT A DEBATE!! I just want to know if there's something I'm missing about the Andromeda modification that still makes it worth spending 3k+ at this point.

Andromeda has much more latitude than the A1 and the HVX, but the workflow is more difficult.

I've thought about the Andromeda upgrade, could get it right now, but still haven't seen/heard enough testimonials to go for it.

One of the biggest selling points is that i already have alot invested in my DVX in terms of the rest of my gear.

And to be able to capture a RAW 4:4:4 stream to my new macbook.

It dosn't seem like as big of an investment as going for an all new camera right now.

Thank you Brody that is precisely my concern. And love the new avatar. It is so appropriate. I wanna start calling you Chief.

Ohh wait its already under your name. Sweet

Two great responses right off.

The 4:4:4 I knew about. What I did NOT know is that it's a possibility to capture it to a Macbook Pro. That sounds nice.

I think the only drawbacks for myself would be pricing and having to go tethered everywhere.

Well its also not 3000 anymore.

It's down to 2500 i believe the last i checked. Pricey but still cheaper than buying a new (HDV compressed) camera.

However the being tethered thing does bother me also. It won't matter in most situations but I'm trying to think of solutions for when it will. Maybe if it can capture while the laptop is closed i can fashion some kind of laptop vest to wear.

Anyway these are things to consider later. I don't want to do the Andromedization until I hear enough from others to feel comfortable making that decision.

Matthew Bennet, as mentioned before, has had experiences with it.

Also, over at DVinfo.net and the actual Andromeda forum (which I'm sure you know) there are samples of Letus35+Andromeda. They don't look too bad, either.

Pardon my ignorance on this but it's my understanding that the Andromeda taps out at the sensor. In the event you had to do something "gorilla" could you still just record to tape and forego the Andromeda setup?

Yep, you can record to tape at the same time, or forego recording andromeda and just capture minidv. Recording to tape is actually useful for capturing audio.

You won't get the RAW 4:4:4 if you aren't tethered to some method of recording. Straight to tape means DV.

Brody beat me to it.

Well, there may have not been enough testimonials on the Andromeda, but maybe that's because we don't have enough guys hitting up this website?

That's one of the purposes for this thread. I know Matthew Bennett uses it, but that's not enough for me. If I'm going to save 2500 for this mod, then I want it to kick ass and be someone that hails it.

In regards to having it tethered, it's not a big deal for hand held stuff on the move. Have a laptop in a backpack or something of the same and rig the usb cable in a way that doesn't disrupt shooting. You click capture and go. I don't see the problem. 75% of my shots are on sticks, so it's cool :)

No, actually I understand that part. I was just thinking of the problems of being tethered. For most applications in "traditional" movie making, you'd shoot tethered and for "handheld" applications, just forego the nice RAW 4:4:4.

That'd suck, though, right? Because you only get miniDV compression. How's that going to match up to the miniDV footage you get?

Touche.

Also you use this program called Sculptor HD when capturing Andromeda footage. and it basically allows you to make very detailed changes to the look you are capturing before you capture it. (the impression i got is that its like using After Effects/MB in camera) That's something i'd hate to miss out on.

I don't know what miniDV looks like on the big screen compared to the 4:4:4 , but I think you'd be able to get away with it for quick, on-the-move shots.

Isn't the main thing with 4:4:4 that you have more latitude, and it's better for keying and color grading?

yeah i think so. and it gets rid of the plaque-yellow buildup that miniDv likes to put around highlighted areas.
