How long should a short film be for submitting?

Sure, I will kill as much as I can, but it's starting to get to the point where the editing may feel too quick. I can cut out reaction shots, but those reaction shots, provide a dark silence in a few moments which I think helps the direction and editing.

that's the real art of editing. knowing not just what to cut out, but how to cut it out.

it also helps to have some emotional distance from the work. I've been in situations where directors didn't want me to cut out shots or scenes because of the difficulty in getting the location, or because it's the only scene with the child in it, etc. That's not a reason to use a shot or a scene. the only reason is that it belongs in the film.

I know that feeling. Had to cut an entire scene that was the result of a 15 hour shoot day once, hands on. The pain, but "it's for the story".
