How long did it take you to get used to using a PORTA-JIB.

I was wondering how much practice it take most people to get good at using a Porta-Jib, dolly and jib arm? I have use one twice, with the flexible and with hard track, and it seems to me to be a very tweaky device.

I have an 8' Kessler crane & flex track (50')....it takes some practice, that's for sure. I usually have to 'mock' the set-up the night before the shoot and practice the moves.
For me, getting the flex-track set-up to run nice and smooth can take some time. Having done this solo in the past, I highly recommend having one person move the crane along the track while another controls the crane moves. It once took me about 20 takes to get the moves to where they were usable.

Needless to say, I think twice before adding this rig to the shot list!

Yeah, I had a curved dolly shoot with a boom up set up in a sound studio that was in a 100 year old building, on ratty carpet over original construction floors that all sloped towards the center of the building, with hard track... and did I mention that I was going to do this shot after 30 minutes of practice? Needless to say, that did not turn out very well. I hate to dis a piece of equipment in regards to those conditions, but that Porta-Jib set up just has so many points that have to be set to specific tolerances to work properly.... There has got to be a better way.
