How Long Can Atomos Hang On?

Atomos had a tough year. The annual report says that on a revenue of $42 million they lost $61 million vs a loss of $10 million the previous year.

Atomos had a tough year. Their stock is no longer trading and sits at $.062. They delayed their 2023 annual report for months. It reports that on a revenue of $42 million they lost $61 million vs a loss of $10 million the previous year.

Yikes! I didn't know that. It seems to me they would be doing a lot better considering their products are pretty darn good for the purpose they serve. Maybe a general industry downturn has created a lot less demand?

I had no idea they were in such rough financial shape. I got to admit my last monitor was one of those Chinese ones for my A74. I wanted the Shinobi but it was like a 100 more and had less features. While Atomos is a higher quality monitor these other brands have closed the gap that in many situations they’re good enough.

They've had several rough years now and although I'd like for them to be around because I used to really love their monitors/recorders, I don't see how they will be unless they start making other products ASAP.

The peak years for their monitors/recorders were 2015-2019.

So if they go under who sells professional monitor/recorder. There used to be another brand Odyssey but haven’t they stopped too? Chinese brands are fine for monitors but when I need it to also record Atomos is my go to.

Blackmagic, SmallHD for Joe and Jane. A handful of others for Joe and Jane's friends...ANDYCINE, FeelWorld, Lilliput, PORTKEYS, so many to choose from.

ARRI has their own for their own cameras...

RED has their own for their own cameras...

tough business

With AF and cameras having proper features, many people on a lower level don't care as much and are able to get by with their 3.5" LCD or get something cheap just to check out framing.

I have an Atomos Ninja V+ and the Blackmagic View Assist and I prefer the View Assist, primarily for the mini-XLR and better user interface. Blackmagic isn't going out of business.

Atomos seems considerably cheaper but once you add on the SDI module (which they stupidly discontinued as they no longer offer an SDI module that has an input and output) the price becomes more similar.

I really liked the original 7" Shogun's interface and really disliked the V's...but Blackmagic was still superior with every GUI they've ever put in a product.

IIRC, Grant once said they wanted to make it simple like what ARRI was doing (very straightforward) but I think they made it even better.

there is junk that unreliability records highly compressed codec with no codec options and then you have very expensive SmallHD, Blackmagic. Atomos is in the Goldilocks zone

huh? it's a difference of a few hundred dollars; a V is $500 and a 5" BM is $800 (sometimes on sale for $700).

In the grand scheme of thousands of dollars being spent in production sometimes just on accessories it's not a big deal for most.

Atomos also has stuff well over $1000 like their 7" 8K recorder and Sumo.

There has been a significant drop in monitor/recorder sales I suspect. People can attach an SSD to the camera. That is more convenient than the monitor/recorder.

I don't see how they will be unless they start making other products ASAP..

Their annual reports indicate they have been trying for several years to re-define themselves and find something that would catch on. It's one of the most difficult things for a company to do; re-define their product line and find a new niche.

It does make a difference I have multiple setups and lots of different equipment. A few hundred on lots of equipment that quickly becomes outdated and obsolete adds up. It you want to spend most of your income on equipment that’s fine.

yeah, no doubt about it. I expected them to try to make a camera but supposedly it's harder than we all think it is (at least a good one, and at least definitely me who expects everyone to try to make one, lol).

Atomos Ninja is $599 plus $200 for the SDI module (which I see is actually no longer discontinued as it is now in stock at B&H), so $800.

Blackmagic View Assist 5" is $800, so, it's the same price, if you need SDI. If you don't need SDI, you can save $200 with Ninja.

I haven't used an external recorder in a very long time. How much of a "thing", or necessary, is it today vs. a decade or so ago?

About a decade ago, one of the hottest things on the market.

Now, practically nonexistent, I think.

We used them to squeeze out a bit better quality (if there even was any), or 10-bit externally, or have more exposure/color tools, or more space on SSDs, or RAW with some cameras, or easier editing with ProRes...but now - with the current state of fantastic cameras and computers for nickels and dimes - who's left?

BUTTT...if recorders could make all camera sensors shoot higher FPS I'd be back on board.

I use them for my legal work as a backup. I used think dual card was a good enough backup until one time there was an error and both cards stopped recording, so now I have a separate device recording. When I do conferences I can use it to record a slide presentation and jobs that don't need backup its a great monitor. I have gotten so much value its hard to put in words how much Atomos has made my life easier.

I use external recorders for recording live edits from a Blackmagic ATEM 4K Studio switcher. I'm not aware of any capable switchers that can record 4K 10 bit 4:2:2 without an external recorder for a similar price point.

Which camera was this? I've had one card stop cos of a write error once (a7Siii) but the other one kept going.
