How likely is Sound Devices 702 series to be updated?

Hi,

I was thinking of purchasing an SD 702 to pair with my SD 302 mixer, but since its been out for a long time and hasn't had any hardware updates...anyone have any insight into whether a new version may be coming sooner than later? Or is its design so awesome that it really doesn't need an update? Thanks!

Well as far as recorders Sound Devices offers the 702, 702T, 722, 744T, 788T. As to whether a new 2-track is on the horizon? Who knows.
You might consider a used unit for a little better price.

Production sound gear isn't like typical consumer electronics, there isn't the need to make it 'new and improved' every six months to keep sales up.
 
i'd spring for a 702t just to future proof yourself. and check with some of the audio houses for good deals on used ones.
 
Okay thank you for the feedback. I completely agree that audio equipment is useful much longer than cameras...I just hope if I do spring for it, new or used, that it isn't replaced with a new model soon since its been around for a while. I remember reading some where that SD was looking toward integrating mixers and recorders...but that may never happen. I know the 552 recorder isn't as good as the standalone devices. Thanks again, I'll look around to see what I can find used...
 
SD does repairs on it's equipment so used is not as problematic as it would be with more consumer oriented recorders. And while they probably won't come out with the new and improved 702, they do issue regular firmware updates. So the 702 with current firmware IS the updated 702.
 
I see...so in other words, it would be a pretty smart investment. Personally, I'm glad they do that as it helps maintain the value of our investments much longer.
