How is your Vegas set up?

I only have a 17" LCD so everything seems pretty cramped. I haven't changed the default look except for putting the preview window on top and timeline on bottom. Any ideas on optimizing the interface? Maybe another monitor would be better so I could place a full preview on that. How do you have yours set up? Thanks.

Dual-monitor is the way to go, definitely. I do OK on a widescreen laptop, too (16:10), but it's not nearly as nice as two 4:3 screens.

I almost never put full previews on the second screen. It's just not necessary, and you should be using an external NTSC monitor/TV, anyway.

I have dual monitors set up (One widescreen laptop, one 19" CRT) and then I have my smaller editing deck camera hooked up to my tv for quick previews and checking what the colors really look like displayed on a tv.

Not sure how many people are aware how easy it is to hook up for preview on a tv but I'll post a step-by-step that should help some of the people here out.

1. Hook up your camera to your computer via firewire.
2. Plug in the AV cables from your camera to the TV. (So now you have your camera connected to both the tv and computer.)
3. Load Vegas.
4. Above the video preview window right click on the monitor icon: "Preview Device Preferences."
5. In the drop down list ("Device") select "OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394/DV"
6. Click Apply>Ok
7. Make sure the Monitor Icon is clicked down before you preview.

Basically instead of previewing the video on your computer, it plays on your camera. Because your camera is plugged into your tv for display you can preview on that. Also make note that your preview settings should be "Best/Full" to maximize the whole experience. Hope this helps someone out there.

I was getting annoyed at trying to select colors from the display preview on a single monitor. I now have a dual 17" monitor setup with a permanent VTR for capturing and also outputting to a tv mounted above my monitors. Lets just say i couldn't ask for much more of a setup, i absolutely love it!

Thanks for this tip!!! I just tried it and it worked. I could never figure it out before. This is way cool. Thanks again!

I have dual monitor display too. Im runnin it on 2 viewsonics, a 19'' and a 17''. And yes i now wish i would have spent another 200$ to get a matching 19'', but im a student. I still love it though. It really has cut my editing time down. Its been very effective. So much track space now.

Has anyone ever tried having a video projector being used as a preview device and playing it on a big projector screen? To me, my projects always look very different (color correction, contrast, overall interpretation) when played on big screen so i thought about investing in something like this.

I've got triple monitor display and a small TV that i hook up to my cam through the AV and Firewire cables.

I tend to spread out all my options and different tabbed windows sorta like AE so i can see my timeline fullscreen. Or i just have another application running in the third monitor like the internet and just have Vegas in the other two.

I use dual monitors...a Viewsonic E90fb and a Samsung 955DF. Then I also color correct using a rack mount Sony PVM-1220 professional monitor at 550 lines of resolution. I only edit SD for now but eventually will go HD but in professional post houses and hi-end varicam or cinealtas only.

I'm currently using the computer crt monitor but I will be getting a tv monitor to color correct my projects. However, when I usually try to view what I have worked on at best/full screen it gets choppy because of the amount of fx and such. Will this also happen when previewing on an external monitor or is there a difference? Oh and - do you have to prerender anything or will it just show you what you're working on on real time? Thanks! in advance...

Vegas is real-time baby. Choppiness will occur depending on your CPU and how much you are doing. For DV with no pictures, it is fine to preview in "good" or even "preview" mode and not "best".

try to get a real true monitor and not a cheap TV. It is best to get a Sony PVM monitor or equivelent. And also make sure it is calibrated correctly using SMPTE color bars or have a pro do it. But don't spend too much since HD is starting to become the norm and in a few years you would have to buy another monitor. Go to online auction or Craigsxxx for possible deals.
