How is supersampling different from motion blur ?

Motion blur will blur actual frames to try and simulate the real-world blur that happens when the camera moves fast. It does not make intermediate frames. Supersampling makes no attempt to blur the frames but tries to create an accurate rendering of what an intermediate frame might have looked like if it were actually in the original footage by combining frames.

If you add supersampling and do not change the frame rate you will see no change. If you add motion blur and do not change the frame rate you will still see blurred frames. Use supersampling when you are changing the frame rate and want really smooth intermediate frames. Use motion blur when the frame rate remains constant and you want the illusion of blur due to motion.

Yes. It is also good when changing resolution because it resamples the data as it scales.

Johnny > so if i was importing a clip of size 512x232 and wanted to render out at double resolution (or maybe HD res) then i should have my project size set at 1024x464 and add super sampling to get a better out when going to dvd or maybe WM91024x464 ??

Yea, supersampling will definitely help with doubling resolution. The value that you set in the supersample envelope is the amount of passes it makes to sample. For example, a supersample value of 4 will take 4 times longer to render because it processes each frame 4 times. So use it sparingly or be prepared for really long renders.

Oh the value we see is the number of passes ? I never knew that. So am i right in that setting a higher res for the project properties will always help when we are rendering out to a smaller size ? (but ofcourse while maintaining same ratio) ??

I wouldn’t make the project properties higher than the source properties. I don’t see the need for that. You want the resize to be done correctly so keeping the project the same as the source will help with aspect ratios.

What ? But several members here told us that the best way to uprez was just to set a higher res in the project properties. Any uprezzing would definitely mean bringing in lower res clips compared to the project resolution. I dont think any of us would want to set a project resolution lower than the source clips res ? So logic itself answers that we wouldnt set proj props lower than source res. But higher ? Does that work like uprezzing is what the big question is ?

Oh,please, how you set a value for supersampling...
Supersampling is an envelope that is available on the Master Video Bus Track.
  1. Press Ctrl+ShIft+B to display the Video Bus Track. (it is always the last track at the bottom)
  2. Right-click in the bus track and select Insert/Remove Envelope > Video Supersampling.
  3. Add points to the envelope like any other envelope in Vegas.
That’s it.
