How is CS5 on a Mac?

Well it's time to upgrade the editing computer again.

I'm switching to PP-CS5 which I have tried out on my Win7 box. I like it a lot. Problem is now I also have to be able to do a spot of editing in FCP if the need arises, which puts me square into looking at Apple's offerings.

I have read few loose comments around the board about CS5 not being as "good" on a Mac as compared to it's Windows brother and I was wondering if anyone could expand on that? True? What are the differences in performance?

I am looking at the lower end Mac Pro (2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon "Nehalem") and stuffing it with a bunch of extra RAM and of couse storage. The issues I am most curious about are two things.

1 - As far as I can tell, the most inexpensive option for the Mercury Engine GPU is the Quadro 4000. Correct?

2 - If I run the Mercury Engine in "software only mode" does anyone know what kind of performance I am going to get out of that 2.8 Quad-core Mac? Workable? Molasses?

I'm not interested in a Windows box anymore. It has to be a Mac, and I don't want to do any sort of hacking to make PP see cards that aren't supported and the like. This has to be by-the-book if stuff goes sideways I can call up support and get real help. Professional no-nonsense system here.

That said I am not an editor by trade, but I do have to do a fair amount of editing. So in that light, please be kind if I have overlooked a seemingly simple fact. About half the footage I edit is AVC files (DSLR) and the other half is a smattering of DVCproHD, XDcamHD and the like.

I need and want the expandability of the Pro. I am not going to get an iMac or a Macbook. And I'm going to try and wait until after NAB, but I may have to buy sooner. Don't know yet.

Thanks!

It runs fine (PP). It's just slightly zippier in Windows, and you have more options for HD preview to external monitors. (Plus many more GPU options.)

The MPE is impressive even without GPU support; astounding with it.

Not sure about the cheapest CUDA card for Mac.
