How is a mattebox mounted onto a lens

Please explain. This pic for example. That stuff looks heavy like hell. My el cheapo plastic box is heavy enough not really feeling to put in onto a lens...

Glass filters arent exactly thin air either. Does any pros actually do this? Or is this a diversion from the photography guys just clipping on a 4x4 holder?

That looks like a light weight Matte box to me... the walls appear to be typical plastic.
And without the french flags the weight could easily be around 400grams.

That being said, I think whoever mounted that matte box like that is a very silly person =P
That lens looks like it already puts a heck of a load of stress on the camera body and the lack of any support underneath can't be great for the thread.
I don't think this is considered a "standard" way of using a matte box.

The only positive is that this guy doesn't need to have a 15mm rail system in place.

Clip on matte boxes aren't unusual in any way. They allow for the advantages and use of a matte box but without the weight of an rod system. All the big name manufacturers make one or two. They are not going to have a million and one stages but they do the job. Also remember that this thing is typically more common on ENG/film cameras where the mount is stronger then your typical DSLR.
