I will be purchasing a Canon XH A1 high-def camcorder very soon and this will be my first go at any HD work. After much research, I am still very confused as to how the whole "HDV compression" thing works. Since I will be recording to miniDV tapes, I am guessing that the footage recorded to the tape has to be compressed by some sort of codec built into the camera? Is this right? From what I understand, it is called the HDV1080i Codec?
I read a magazine articles in VideoMaker magazine and it said using the HDV compression, HD footage is about the same filesize per minute as SD footage? How is that? Everything I have heard has said that editting HD demands far more storage, memory and processor(s) than editting SD footage.
And how is it that 63 minutes of HD footage can fit on a single MiniDV cassette? If it is indeed compressed... how much image quality is lost? How would I get the raw HD footage? Would I even want to?
I noticed a posted clip in the HVX200 forums from Beaver Hill Productions and after watching it, I was thoroughly impressed with the quality and sharpness of the video. This is what I am seeking with an HD camera. Would footage like this be shot using compressed HDV?

So as you can see I am very confused as to how it all works. And it is hard for me to move forward not knowing these details. So any help or advice is greatly appreciated on this matter. Thanks so much for your time.
