Hey,
just wondering how the DCP holds up compared to hooking up a monitor via a decklink or similar...
Color accuracy?
Sharpness?
Noise?
Leaving out the choice of monitor of course...
It won't hold up at all. DCP is reference only. Low res playback compared to the signal a capture card gets you. Color accuracy, sharpness, noise...way off.
A great inexpensive solution is the Matrox MXO and an Apple 23" cinema display. True HD broadcast colors for under $2000.
Thanks Shane!
I thought the of the mxo mostly as a way of outputing HD to tape from a laptop...?
So, can reliable monitoring only be achieved with extra hardware?
Or, how "way of" is the DCP compared to eg the MXO?

That and a way of professional monitoring. And you aren't limited to using it on a laptop. It works with any mac with a DVI port...which I think is every mac made today. It is just pushed heavily for laptops and iMacs for they have no other output options aside from DV and HDV. With this device, you can output to pretty much any format of video.

Correct. With DV, you need a deck or camera to route the signal thru to a monitor. With DVCPRO HD, you need a DVCPRO HD deck, or HD capture card. HDV...well, an HD card is the ONLY way you are going to monitor it properly. And other high end format...all require a card.

The quality of the image is artifacted...pretty heavily. And the Gamma...overall range of image...is higher with DCP. It is meant only to look at your footage in a window larger than that of your canvas when you play back.
