How does this compare with the Dell 2405?

Hmmm... I don't know how to judge picture quality, but I couldn't help notice the portrait view, flipping the image 90 degrees for viewing longer web pages or other documents. Pretty cool.

1680x1050 will not give you pixel-for-pixel monitoring of 1080 HD - the 24" Dell will (with 1920x1200 RESOLUTION)

the Dell will do portrait as well.. and it's a sweet monitor. Also comes with a 3 year warranty and some buy back option as well. It also has component input and PIP. SO far I love it....

Comparing that to the 2405 isn't what you should be doing... The one that it is closer to is the 2005. The 20.1" with the same resolution.. For cheaper I might add. Don't even look at the gateway, not worth it. There's a reason people working with 1080i/p footage work with the 2405 instead of the 2005... That extra bit of resolution gives you exactly what you need to see 1080p footage.

Any widescreen lcd monitor that's worth it's liquid crystals will do portrait view. The monitor doesn't change how the pixles are displayed after all... It's the display card in your computer to changes the angle.

Buy Dell... I was planning on the apple 23" monitor but the Dell 24" gives me everything I need. Perfect editing monitor and when I take a break I can play my xbox 360 on it. Lightweight enough to be used as a monitor for the HVX when you're shooting, just have the component cables plugged in... Everything you need.
