How does one edit those annoying JVC .MOD FILES?

The JVC cameras use those annoying .MOD files which are incompatible with Premierer. How do I go about editing them? I tried to convert them but that's a nightmare and creates more incompatible files. Renaming them won't do it either. Does anybody have a solution?

You can re-wrap them into mpeg-ps with avidemux , all you are doing is "swapping containers", so there is no quality loss

1) open your file
2) set video & audio sidebar to "copy", format to "mpeg-ps"
3) save with extension (e.g. "myfile.mpg")

When you import into PP, you may have to interpret/conform the file (field order, aspect ratio)

In Avidemux there is no Mpeg-ps There is only: mpeg4-asp - mpeg4 avc - mpeg4 asp - mpeg 1

This is the usual nightmare where trial and error takes days and you never get something that works with Premiere.

Leave that as "copy"

video=>copy
audio=>copy
format=>mpeg-ps

I'm using r5869 svn build, QT version

I've have a bunch of MOD files from a Canon FS100 and have been able to simply rename the .MOD extension to .MPG and open them in Premiere Elements. Is the MOD format from JVC different?

The JVC MOD files are a pain in the ass. IMPOSSIBLE TO EDIT! They need to be converted and that is a pain. I have not yet found a way to do it. STAY AWAY FROM JVC!!!

jacotte - are you saying avidemux didn't work for you?

I helped a friend with a projected a month ago and the JVC MOD clips were re-wrapped and imported into PP CS4 fine. They are not converted as in re-encoded, only re-packaged. If you wanted to re-encode them to something else , (maybe DV-AVI) you could, but it would take longer, and you would get quality loss

I found the solution. The Cineform HD link will convert anything to Prospect Codec. I converted the files to Prospect DV PAL. This will be a lesson for the future. One always needs to have a codec base. Thank you.
