How does FCP open MFX files?

Hi,

I am just wondering the details of FCP opening P2 (mxf) files?
In PC, in order to open the mfx files, I need the whole folder structure on the disk. With other words, if I import only the mxf file alone, I can not open it.
How about with FCP?
I know, FCP converts it right away to Quicktime in order to be viewed, but I'd like to know, if the whole folder structure is also needed?

Thank you, I am aware of that..but my question was different....on the PC I need to have the whole folder with the content and all mxf files and a folder at the end called "lastclip.txt"
When I click on an mxf file....nothing happens (of course I must have to propper software).
How about in FPC? It opens by itself, even without Raylight, but converts to Quicktime.)
My question was, do you need to click only on the mxf file in order to view it or must you also import first the whole folder?

The proper way to bring MXF's into FCP is to use the Log and Transfer window. FCP's workflow is MXF to QuickTime .MOV.

If you need full metadata support with the MXF files you go with Raylight or HD Log but direct MXF editing is not neccesary to actually cut video and audio. So .MOV QuickTime editing on which the whole FCP workflow is based, for many users is sufficient.

Thank you fort explaining....I better tell the whole story;
I am using Edius Broadcast on PC.
The company I want to send the clips are Mac only users.
They want me to send the clips in Quicktime (DVCpro HD) which I can not.
Not I am looking for solutions........
I wanted to offer them to send P2 files, because Mac can open them easy.
But I wanted to know, what I would have to send them in order for them to view the clips without any complicated way of opening it. I told them its only click on the mxf file and it will open in Quicktime on their computer.
I just needed to have confirmed what I told them and what I would need to send them (no use the send them a single mxf file, if their Mac can not open it)

If they've got Final Cut Pro 5.1.2 or later, then sending them MXF files should be no problem, but they'll have to import those files to use them in any other application.

Doesn't Edius Broadcast 4.5 allow you to export a DVCPRO-HD Quicktime file? It can read them, but I don't know if it can export them.

It's always best to give the client exactly what they asked for whenever possible. Maybe DVFilm.com's Maker program would let you convert the files to DVCPRO-HD QT files?

If you wanted to send the raw MXF so they could ingest into FCP the best thing would be the entire image of the original P2 card- i.e. all of the folders and the lastclip.txt file. Always a great idea to be a full backup of every P2 card.
