How does FCP detect Progressive / Interlaced video

Trying to wrap my head around the 24p thing. I am shooting standard 24p so will use the same workflow as 29.98 fps. Wondering how FCP knows that the footage is progressive and where is this setting changed / set? I am encoding strictly for the web and when I sent it to compressor it knew or perhaps I choose not to de-interlace the output as it came out looking good with not interlacing artifacts / jaggies.

FCP doesn't know what you recorded at nor does it adjust its sequence to match your footage. That is done by the editor. You can use the Easy Setups or Command + 0 to change sequence settings.

Compressor usually does a good job at detecting what FCP sends it - an interlaced or progressive sequence.

Also note, if you use interlaced footage in a progressive timeline, FCP will render it to progressive on output.

Hope that helps...

Quicktime video settings?

Quicktime video settings?

Ok, so bring up the sequence dialog and hit the advanced button under the Quicktime video settings. I see a radio button scan mode - I presume I must change it to progressive? The output in FCP canvas still has interlacing, what am I doing by changing this setting? Do I need to do this every time. Just trying to figure out once and for all a workflow for 24p to web delivery only. All of my content will be delivered by web only.

(just noticed that if I set a new sequence to be progressive then add my footage to it FCP complains about wanting the same setting for clip and sequence - clicking OK make the sequence go back to interlaced ?????)

I'd love to see a full workflow for us poor bastards who are stuck with our old DVX100As :) Most articles are donkey years old. Perhaps I will post what I believe to be best - 24p web workflow. I still don't understand how something that is shot in 24p normal will look on the web compared to summin that is in 24pA with the frames removed. (smaller file, can get a higher bit rate but for the web nowadays who cares about 20% decrease in size)

The compressor 3 setting I use is: Apple TV HD - 24p. Wondering how it will pull out the B frames if my timeline is 29.92. I've had good luck using the reverse telesine.

See how bloody confusing all of this is : )
