How does everyone make these uber cool cuts / transitions in their videos?

Hi, I really hope someone can help me out here. I've been learning premiere over the last couple weeks and love it, I am wanting to dive into After Effects as well. What I really want to know is how these cool transition effects are done in this video >> http://vimeo.com/32167565. Everytime I see a similar video and ask how they are done, everyone is so vague like they don't want to share their secret haha. Specifically what I would like to learn, is how the cuts seem to utilize a few different effects into the transitions, where there might be a slight zoom, shift / shake, flicker / film flash. Is there a good tutorial that goes over some of these transition techniques? Thanks if someone can point me in the right direction!

Bring a copy of a video that you like in to your NLE, and step through the transitions frame by frame to see what is really going on, and then try to duplicate the same effect with your own footage.

There are lots of cool transitions used in commercials and broadcast TV shows, where you can do the same thing to figure out how each one was done. There is no easy route to figuring this stuff out.

Zoom, Shake, flicker, film flash: All of these would qualify as separate transitions and possibly separate tutorials.

1. Have you Googled your query?

2. You did notice someone in the comments section (for the video) asked the same thing, right?

3. Could be the reason folks are vague is because what you ask is really tough to answer. In programs such as AE, you might have tons of layers during a transition each one adding their own little Spit-&-Polish to the desired outcome.

4. Lets say you wrote me and asked a similar question about the Silent Film I recently did. it is only 3:12 long, yet it has over 280 layers within the comp. Sometimes there really is no easy answer.

5. Dive into AE and see for yourself. There are lots of wonderful effects to be found in there and easily applied to your footage.

Great post. I get asked multiple times a week how certain things are done and I'm willing to help until it gets to point that they rely on me to be the answer to everything. The best way to learn anything is to research and discover. The people who did all these so called effects didn't have the luxury of someone on a forum telling them verbatim how to achieve a certain effect. They watched what other ppl did, took that knowledge and try to figure it out in whatever program they were using. That's why they may be vague and non responsive because they put in so much effort to figure something while everyone wants effects knowledge handed to them on a silver platter. The best way to figure out something is what tom_wise and theDingo said. It's more worth it in the end instead someone telling you step by step how it is done.

Great effect. I don't think there's a short cut to making these. It looks like this is one you have to do by hand (unless I'm wrong and there's a "Horror Montage" transition plug-in already).

Several jump cuts in quick succession, sometimes creating a back and forth motion, I see some of the age old film burn effect. In the end you also see a zig zag motion in the video with motion blur applied.
