how to do workaround with this as a film maker?

When you are the only employee in a media company, and your boss is a guy who has no film/media related knowledge whatsoever (he is a economics grad).

He goes out and shoot videos with you, he wants to be the main Cinematographer and you, as a Film grad who knows lots of film theories with some shooting techniques, cant even make the right decisions, you have to always listen to him and do whatever he says. eventhough you know its a false decision.

as he slowly learning from the mistakes he made, but he just never listens to you.

You, as a non-citizen employee with a working visa, graduated for 1.5 years without a professional portfolio (of course ! everything youve made after graduation was a collaboration with this kind of boss) cant even find another proper full time job. you have to stick with this guy until your immigration process is finished 2 years later.

your pay, of course, minimum. 25k a year. constantly bullied by families for the low income you get.

Regardless of the pay, you cant even learn anything from this place, youtube, vimeo, dvxuser, are your only friends.

never done any projects that has a budget higher than $4 bucks.

cant rely on craiglist for jobs as your boss is posting ads there as well. Youve mistakenly sent a resume to his inbox through craiglist one time.

But the good thing is, you have a complete camera set (Canon C + primes + tripod + monopod + slider), no lights, no shotguns, no flags, no friends.

How do you work around with this ?

A lot of this is going to depend on where this person lives. If they live in a production hub area like LA, NY, Atlanta, New Orleans, Austin, etc., then they need to start networking and getting in with other film people. Work on short films on the weekends, build connections and a better reel until they can get enough work to leave this position. Heck even consistent PA work will pay better than $25k a year.

If they do not live in such an area, then they are severely limited. I would still recommend making shorts/music videos/whatever they can on the weekends to build up a reel. And then ultimately consider moving. Unfortunately to really get enough work in this business to where you don't have to have the types of jobs this person has, you need to be in an area where a lot of productions are going on.

Write the script... call it 'Green Card'... no wait that's taken... "Residence"... and make a movie... pay your 'two years before the mast' dues... and move on.

You keep your mouth shut and do as you're told. It might help to remember there are people who would kill to be in your position.

Find other filmmakers in similar or worse (ie: not working at all) situations and make films on the weekend. It is nobody else's fault that he doesn't have anything for his reel if he's not out there making films. If they aren't satisfied with their output from their job, just treat it as a regular paycheck and work on great projects on weekends. That's how most people generate their first reel.
