How do you work with pre-fabricated 3D models and bring them into AFTER EFFECTS?

Hey guys,

Like many filmmakers I was really inpressed with MONSTERS. I know Gareth Edwards used a lot of pre-fabricated 3D models. I have quite a bit of experience with AFTER EFFECTS, but none with 3D programs. I have access to both 3DS Max, which Edwards used, and Blender, so can people please give me some advice?

Basically what I want to do is import a 3D model from a site like this:

http://www.archive3d.net/

and bring it into 3DSMax/Blender, and be able to bring it into AE amd composite it in to my shot.

The sort of questions I need answering are:

*I assume that the 3D model will need to be animated in the 3D program instead of AE? How do I do that? I just want simple animation of inanimate objects like planes flying across the sky in the background or a tank driving across the ground in the BG. I'm pretty familiar with animating in AE so I don't think it will be too hard to pick it up, but if anyone can tell me how it's done I'd be most grateful.

*The 3D model files come as a 3DS Max project and also these picture files that look like textures? Sorry for my ignorance, I'm new to 3D, but how do I put those texture files onto the model?

* How do I render a model and then import it into AE from 3DS Max?

* I assume that when I import the 3DSMax model into AE, it will be "flat" rather than 3D?

* Should I try and match the lighting in AE or do some in 3DS Max as well?

Any advice on these or other things you think I may need to know would be greatly appreciated.

THANKS
