How do you record audio

Do you take all your audio and feed it into a mixer and then into a dat machine? Or do you feed the mics straight into your Panny? We've been feeding them straight into the Panny. Just wondering if a seperate recording device is better or just a luxury.
 
external flash recorders are popular, I have a DAT and a minidisc that I used with music in the past, but for the most part unless I am dealing with a special situation I feed into the camera from the mixer.
