How do you output for TV while editing?

I have a small single-chip camera I usually use for TV preview while editing, but I think it´s not the best professional solution. What do you guys do? Is there any other cheaper solution than buying a mini-dv deck? Just to make it more clear: the problem is not the capture (I can do it with the small camcorder), but the preview. Maybe a bidirectional converter? I searched around this forum and didn´t find much things about bi-converters. Since I use Adobe Premiere too, please recommend me something I can use with both Premiere and Vegas.

I don’t know about Premiere (I’m a Vegas user) but I use an ADS Pyro A/V Link for external preview with Vegas. I also use it for capturing analog with Vegas as well. The Canopus ADVC-110 is also good but a little more expensive.

Pyro seems a good solution. Do you (or anyone) have problem with sync and low quality picture on TV and on captured footage?

The early A/V Links did have some sync issues with analog capture. I had one but ADS Tech updated it for me free of charge. Make sure you get an API-550 Rev C with Firmware 3.3 dated May 1, 2005. They seem to be very solid. I never had a problem with preview even with the older version.

If you have real bad analog tapes to capture, you might want to go for the Canopus ADVC-300. That has a Time Base Corrector built in as well as noise reduction.

just hook up your rca cable (yellow) from your minidv cam to your monitor.Make sure the firewire is connected to the cam.Use the external monitor preview from the vegas timeline, there ya go.IF i understand what you are trying to do is just view what you are cutting on a bigger screen?

Yellowdog's got the easy answer there for you ... you can also run your audio to the TV with your white/red plugs as well the same way.

In fact, what I REALLY need is the preview, but I didn´t want to use the camcorder everytime. I also think capture cards, like matrox rtx.100 are too expensive. Maybe the best solution is really the a/v-dv converter

I've been looking for this topic just this weekend, so please be patient. Tell me if I have got this right (before I order the ADS Pyro AV/DV link):

I would connect the av/dv link to my pc tower via firewire, then connect the converter to my Toshiba tv via rca cables? Then select "preview on external monitor" in Vegas?

Besides wear and tear on the firewire port on the camera, is there any other reason for not previewing on the external monitor just using the camera?

Thanks as always...

Terri, you've got it right on both counts. You would use the Pyro just as you described.

And, yes, there's not much advantage to doing it that way over just using the camera, other than a) saving the firewire port, and b) your camera would not be tied to the editing station anymore, it'd be free to go do whatever while the editing station is in use.

Wear & tear on the firewire port? I never even thought of that. I guess if you'r plugging & unplugging it daily it would wear after a while, but wouldn't that take a LOT of those events for that to begin to happen? I've honestly never heard of that as an issue, so I've always balked at the idea of buying a converter when I can just use the camera for free when I need to.
