How do you match audio volume in a video?

I found it in desperation working on SciFest.

Trying to make my Voiceover sound different from my ADR and my ADR and wild track sound like location sound I actually googled "Magic Frequencies" and low and behold there was actually website by that name

The way I do it using Premiere Pro, should be similar with other editors, too:

A) Listen thorough the timeline -> adjust each clip volume with "audio gain" right button function if necessary. This happens with just guessing and by ear, usually something like -20 to +10 depending on the original clip volume and if it is dialog or just ambience.

B) Edit video, add effects, add commentary, music etc. I add a short audio crossfade, about 1 sec on almost every cut, makes continuous action sound much smoother.

C) Listen thorough the edited material with audio meters and adjust (write) on the fly with slides. Make a few passes this way. With many audio channels takes some time. This is also possible to do with rubber bands, but I have found using the sliders easier and faster. PPro writes the level (rubber bands) on the traks.

D) Export to tape and listen/watch with the living room TV to catch any mistakes.

repeat C) if necessary.

I try to make dialog peaks at about -6 dB, ambience average around -20, absolute peaks -2 dB.

Still learning...
