How do you log footage?

Hi all --

I finished the production part of my doc and are about to start editing. Not easy with 70+ hours of footage to keep organized.

How do you log your footage? Do you select scenes by topics and put them into different project folders inside your NLE, or do you transcribe your footage/interviews first and use that as a log to select which scenes best fit together?

Thanks for your help!

I'm in the same boat as you with about 30 hours of footage/interviews. I was going to try importing it all into one enormous Premiere CS4 project and use it's extensive meta logging features (like tags, speech regonition, etc). To be honest I'm a little nervous about the enormous load times. It's a problem because any given interview might cover a dozen different topics, and I don't know a good way to cross reference that information so I only need to log it once.

What you might want to consider is transcribing all your interviews, to include TC. Time consuming, yes, but in the long run it will will save you time during editing.

to expand on my comment on using movie logger. It allows you to write a comment about each clip that you log. Then when you export , you can export the clips via an .xml file and import then into your bin in FCP. And a RTF (word doc) is created with all of the clip start / stop times, duration and your notes. I've found it to be very handy.

I also have dozens of hours of documentary material. I'd like to transcribe it with timecode, and it sounds like movie logger could be a good tool. I'm not a very fast typist though and I was thinking about repeating the dialog into a microphone connected to a PC running Dragon Naturally Speaking, which does speech to text conversion and then importing the transcription into a logging program. Has anyone out there done anything like that? Does it seem feasible? Thanks!

I will probably have to do that, even though it is VERY time consuming.

Last night I started transcribing the transcript right into Celtx and attached thumbnail images (screenshots of the footage). By doing so I can use the transcript for the final script in Celtx.
